Health

Ober|Kaler is a pioneer in health care law. The origins of our Health Law Group date back nearly 40 years, to the beginnings of Health Law as a recognized practice area. We are leaders in providing premier legal services to academic and community hospitals, health systems, long-term care facilities, clinical laboratories, institutional pharmacies, physicians and physician organizations. Our growing and evolving practice now includes representation of ancillary service providers, pharmacy and biotechnology companies, health care management and billing companies, and health care trade organizations.

Ober|Kaler’s Health Law Group is particularly effective because many of our attorneys bring the perspective gained from working in the federal government, at associations, in hospitals and private practice, and with health care organizations in the public and private sector. Among our group, currently numbering more than 35 attorneys working full time on behalf of our health care clients, are:

  • More than 15 attorneys who worked for federal government agencies, including:
    • The HHS Office of Inspector General
    • The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
    • The Department of Justice
    • The Internal Revenue Service
  • Four former state assistant attorneys general
  • A former president of the American Hospital Association
  • A former hospital administrator
  • Two former in-house counsel to hospital networks
  • A former general counsel to a national, publicly traded, long term care company
  • A licensed physical therapist
  • A CPA

These talented attorneys allow us to develop creative and innovative legal solutions that reflect our “real world” knowledge of the industry.

We are one of only a small number of firms in the country to have two attorneys elected to serve as presidents of the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA), a 7,000-plus member professional association dedicated to the health care industry. Today, one attorney serves as Vice Chair of the AHLA Physician Practice Group. Another of our attorneys serves on the AHLA board of directors. In recognition of their commitment to the health care industry, the AHLA has named two of our attorneys among its inaugural Class of Fellows and has presented two of our attorneys with the David J. Greenburg Service Award, an award given annually to those lawyers who have made significant contributions to the AHLA over the course of their careers.

In addition to being leaders in the field and providing top-quality services to our health care clients, our dedicated attorneys provide aggressive representation that is sensitive to client costs. We work hand-in-hand with in-house, local and national counsel to create a unified team that approaches each case with one common goal: to achieve successful results for our clients.
